NORDPLUS Intensive Course “Mediation in Criminal and Civil cases” 2025

Mediation is an effective interdisciplinary method for dispute resolution, integrating legal studies, entrepreneurship, administration, and psychology. This Intensive Course aimed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical training, equipping them with essential skills to resolve conflicts of diverse contexts amicably.

Developing conflict resolution skills is crucial as students preparing to work and life in complex professional and social environments. Conflicts are inevitable in fields such as law, business, administration, and psychology, and the ability to manage disputes effectively impacts personal and professional success. Mediation teaches students to analyze situations critically, communicate effectively, and foster constructive dialogue, helping them resolve disagreements efficiently and prevent escalation.

Turiba Univeristy has long cooperated with several Baltic and Scandinavian partners on mediation topic. In the summer of 2025, in cooperation with 2 partner universities, a NORDPLUS intensive course on mediation was held - an intensive training that provided students with in-depth theoretical and practical preparation.

This year 14 students from Latvia, Lithuania and Finland participated in the intensive course in Riga, Turiba Univeristy (Latvia) to improve their knowledge in mediation.

The mediation course covered a wide range of topics, including the theoretical foundations and core principles of mediation, the mediation process, the mediator’s toolbox, negotiation as the basis for mediation, factors affecting negotiation and negotiating styles, negotiation stages and techniques, verbal and non-verbal behaviour in negotiation, recognising and stopping manipulations, conflict diagnosis and practical mediation techniques. The programme combined lectures, practical workshops and role-plays, team activities, discussions with experienced practitioners, intercultural sessions and study visits, including visits to the Parliament and the Supreme Court of Latvia.
