Turība Healthcare students obtain medical practitioner status

After graduating from the Turība University Health Care study programs “Aesthetic Cosmetology”, “Therapeutic Massage” and “Nutrition”, students obtain not only professional qualifications, but also the status of a medical professional, which opens up much broader career opportunities. Clients more often choose specialists with the status of a medical professional, as it increases trust and professionalism.
In the beauty industry, currently, one of the most popular procedures is mesotherapy and biorevitalization, the use of lasers, lipolysis, endosphere and radiofrequency technologies, stratosphere, shockwave and cavitation, ultrasound, as well as the use of other medical technologies. As public demand for such services continues to grow, stricter conditions are being set for performing these procedures. Starting from January 1, 2026, only certified medical professionals will be allowed to perform them in order to ensure high quality of services and customer safety. “This is important because such procedures in Latvia should not be provided by specialists who complete non-formal education courses - courses lasting only a few days, weeks or months without prior specialized education, as is unfortunately the case at the moment,” explains Marika Ģederte-Kaprano, Head of the Beauty Care Association and Head of the Healthcare Department at Turība University.
Although procedures such as mesotherapy and biorevitalization, as well as the acquisition of the aforementioned medical equipment, are already included in the Turība short-cycle higher education or college study program “Aesthetic Cosmetology”, however, in order to obtain the right to work independently with the aforementioned technologies, it is necessary to pass a certification exam in the industry association immediately after graduation. During the studies, students gain in-depth knowledge of the use of medical devices and the risks associated with them, as well as promote understanding of hygiene and epidemiological safety standards and their observance, assessment of the client’s health status before the procedure and acquire skills in providing first aid, as well as in cooperation with dermatologists, physiotherapists, surgeons and other health professionals.
Students of the “Aesthetic Cosmetology” study program offered by the Turība University Health Care Direction will continue to acquire professional skills in order to be able to obtain the status of a medical professional, which will become a mandatory prerequisite for providing high-risk services.
“It is important for us that the public is informed about appropriate qualifications of beauty specialists and their health is protected. So that the service is safe, so that inappropriate equipment and technologies are not offered on the market. The status of a medical professional in beauty care is not just a formal title - it is a legally, professionally and practically justified necessity. It protects the client’s health and strengthens the quality standards of the industry. The status of a certified medical professional must be a quality standard in beauty care”, emphasizes M. Kaprano-Ģederte.
“The status of a medical professional expands professional opportunities - both when working in medical institutions, for example, SPA centers that are registered as medical institutions, and also when cooperating with other medical specialties. Clients more often choose specialists with medical status, because it means a higher level of safety and competence. Insurance companies also often cover only the services provided by medical professionals,” says M. Kaprano-Ģederte.
Turība University offers studies in the field of Health Care, providing students with the opportunity to acquire a profession in one of two short-cycle higher education or college study programs “Aesthetic Cosmetology” and “Therapeutic Massage”. In turn, from the 2025/2026 academic year, the Health Care direction offers studies in the bachelor's study program “Nutrition”, which is the newest nutritional science program in the Baltics and was created by leading industry specialists in collaboration with doctors and other health care professionals.
