Juan Esteban Jurado Gomez: From Colombia to Riga: Building a Global Business Career at Turība University

What motivated you to choose Turība University and Latvia as a study destination?

My main motivation for choosing Turība University for my Master’s degree was that the diploma is recognized across the European Union, which is important for my long-term professional plans. In addition, the tuition fees matched my budget, and the university’s focus on business made it a suitable and practical choice for my career development.

Regarding Latvia, I saw it as a country with growth potential in the business environment. Compared to larger European cities, Riga offers a more affordable cost of living while still providing good infrastructure, quality of life, and professional opportunities. For me, it represented both personal and professional growth.

Can you briefly introduce your study programme and explain what you enjoy most about it?

The MBA programme focuses on understanding companies from a holistic perspective. It helps students see how different areas of a business are connected and how management decisions influence overall performance.

It also provides practical tools that allow professionals to contribute more strategically to business growth and long-term development. What I enjoy most is analyzing real business situations and connecting theory with practice. Since I am passionate about business and strategy, I find it valuable to explore different approaches to solving organizational challenges.

How would you describe your experience as an international student from Colombia living and studying in Latvia?

My experience in Latvia has been very positive. The culture is different from Colombia, but Riga offers a safe, organized, and calm environment.

The language has not been a major barrier, as many people speak English. I have felt respected and welcomed. People are often curious about Colombia, which has created meaningful conversations and cultural exchange. Overall, I feel comfortable living and studying here.

What were your biggest challenges when you first arrived, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges was adapting to cultural differences, especially communication style. In Colombia, people tend to be very open and expressive, while in Latvia communication can be more reserved.

Over time, I understood that this is simply part of the culture. Learning basic Latvian words like “sveiki” helped me connect better with people. Once trust is built, I realized that Latvians are kind and supportive.

How has studying at Turība University contributed to your academic and personal growth?

The programme has strengthened my strategic thinking and business perspective. Several subjects provided practical insights that I have been able to apply directly in my professional roles.

On a personal level, studying in English has increased my confidence in professional communication. Balancing studies with work has also improved my discipline, organization, and ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively.

What differences have you noticed between the education system in Colombia and Latvia?

The education systems differ in structure and evaluation methods. In Colombia, many programmes are more theoretical, while here I have experienced a different academic approach and grading system.

Experiencing both systems has broadened my perspective and allowed me to understand different ways of learning and assessing knowledge.

How do you balance your studies with life outside the university?

Balancing studies and work has been demanding. Currently, I work as a Marketing Coordinator in Colombia and as a Channel / Partnership Marketing Specialist in Latvia.

This requires strong time management and clear priorities, but it also allows me to immediately apply academic concepts in real business environments, which makes the learning process more practical and meaningful.

What advice would you give to prospective international students?

I would recommend clearly defining your professional and academic goals before choosing a university. It is important to research the study programme, teaching approach, and schedule to ensure they align with your expectations.

Studying abroad requires adaptability and initiative, but it can significantly expand both professional opportunities and personal development.
