European Researchers’ Night at Turība University – Discover the Invisible: Science and Sensations!

This year, Turība University invites you on September 26, from 18:00 to 21:00, to focus on human senses and discover how they affect our health and well-being. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in exciting activities that combine science with practical experience, exploring the close connection between body and mind. Uncover the world of science and research through a fundamental pillar of a full life – well-being. Visitors are encouraged not only to observe but also to step into the role of a researcher in various activity zones.

By completing engaging and educational tasks, everyone will experience joy and learn how science interacts with the balance of mind, body, and spirit.

TASTE DETECTIVES

During the event, everyone can try identifying spices using their sensory skills – recognizing spices by smell, taste, and appearance.

This activity highlights the importance of spices in nutrition, health, and science, as many spices contain biologically active compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that positively affect human well-being.

SECRETS OF THE LAMP

Skin mole examination with a Wood’s lamp will provide an opportunity to see things invisible to the naked eye. Using ultraviolet radiation, this diagnostic method allows for a detailed assessment of skin pigmentation, moles, and overall skin condition, which is especially important for early detection of skin diseases.

SKIN CODE

Participants can also explore digital skin diagnostics with the Skin Analyzer – an innovative device that uses optical sensors and software to measure skin moisture, elasticity, pigmentation, and pore condition. This method provides an objective and scientifically grounded overview of skin health.

WOODEN PULSE

At the maderotherapy station, visitors can learn about a massage technique using special wooden tools. This technique stimulates blood circulation, promotes lymphatic drainage, and improves muscle tone. The mechanical action on tissues helps activate the body’s self-renewal processes, reduce tension, and enhance well-being. Two massage chairs will be available on-site, where anyone can experience the benefits of this technique firsthand.

PH JOURNEY

At the drink pH test station, visitors can practically explore how acidity affects teeth and digestion. Using pH indicator strips, everyone can test the acidity of various drinks – cola, juices, coffee, water, mineral water, and milk – comparing results to neutral pH (7) and saliva pH (6.7). After reading the results together, explanations will be given on which drinks are most acidic, how acidity impacts tooth enamel and the digestive system, along with practical advice.

ART INSTALLATION “DISCOVER YOURSELF”

Visitors will also have access to a special art installation, “Discover Yourself,” located in the Turība foyer in collaboration with LABRAINS. Created by a 10th grade student, the installation draws public attention to the importance of healthy habits. The art piece – a 1 x 1 meter installation – depicts a small skeleton with plastic “organs” represented on the skin. It symbolizes the accumulation of plastics and chemicals in the body if we do not choose responsible cosmetics and lifestyle. Viewing the installation, visitors can digitally answer questions and participate in a raffle, with results published on LABRAINS’ Instagram account.

This year, Turība University’s European Researchers’ Night activities are organized in cooperation with the field of Health Care, offering students study opportunities in two short-cycle higher education (college) programs: “Aesthetic Cosmetology” and “Therapeutic Massage,” as well as the bachelor’s program in “Nutrition.” This is the newest nutrition science program in the Baltics, developed by leading industry experts in collaboration with doctors and other healthcare specialists.

The event is held in partnership with the following companies: Manas Garšas, Food Union, Tradehouse, Maderotherapy Latvia, Labrains, and Lakto.

Free parking is available for event visitors, including easy access for buses.
