Baltic security begins with cooperation - Turiba students on an exchange visit in Lithuania
Last week, 8 security field students and 3 lecturers from Turiba University participated in a NORDPLUS Express mobility visit to Kaunas at the Public Security Academy of Mykolas Romeris University. The academy is one of the leading security and law enforcement education institutions in Lithuania, preparing specialists for public security, border guard services, and other security institutions. The academy closely cooperates with national security authorities and regularly organises practical training, international projects, and professional development activities.
During the visit, students became familiar with Lithuania’s experience in the field of security and public order, participated in discussions, and took part in international cooperation activities. It was an excellent opportunity to gain insight into the academy’s work and study process.
Such mobility activities provide students with valuable international experience and the opportunity to explore approaches used in other countries within the respective field. The NORDPLUS Express mobility format is particularly important because it is suitable for working students or students who, due to personal circumstances, cannot participate in long-term exchange programmes. This intensive and concentrated format allows participants to gain valuable contacts, knowledge, and international experience within a short period of time.
“Cooperation among the Baltic States in the field of security is especially important today. The Nordplus programme provides an opportunity for students and professionals from the Nordic and Baltic regions to exchange experience, knowledge, and current approaches at a time when regional security challenges are becoming increasingly complex. The visit to Lithuania was a valuable opportunity to strengthen cooperation between security education institutions and future security professionals, as close regional cooperation is one of the key preconditions for strengthening security,” emphasises Kārlis Apalups, Head of the Security Study Direction at Turiba University.
During the visit, students also participated in shooting competitions, where they had the opportunity to test their professional skills and teamwork in an international environment. A total of 16 teams participated in the competition - 12 student teams and 4 professional teams. Latvia was represented by 4 teams - 3 from Turiba University and 1 from the Latvian Border Guard College. Such practical activities strengthen professional competencies and cooperation among security sector representatives from the Baltic States.
Modern security challenges increasingly require close cooperation at the Baltic level. Visits such as this help to build long-term cooperation links between universities, students, and security professionals across the Baltic region.
The project is funded by the NORDPLUS programme project “Security Risk Management”, project No. NPHE-2025/10267.
