Students’ Council: New Board of Students’ Council for 2010 elected!

On 13th January elections for the new board members of the Students’ Council (SP) 2010 were held in the silent reading room of the library at the School of Business Administration Turiba. 13 candidates stood for various positions. 59 SP members participated in the elections with full voting rights.

The following candidates were elected as board members for the Students’ Council 2010:

  • Chairperson - Jānis Dāboliņš
  • Vice Chairperson - Līga Gablika
  • Head of Public Relations - Madara Rube
  • Head of Cultural Activities - Ance Krūmiņa
  • Head of Academic Activities - Anete Veipāne
  • Head of International Relations - Kristiāna Tumena
  • Head of External Communication - Gundars Strazdiņš
  • Head of Sports Activities - Artūrs Vītols
  • Head of Commercial Activities - Edvīns Rutkis
  • Head of Finance - Toms Ritums

Candidates for each position gave a 3-minute speech introducing themselves, their previous experience and gave an overview of the planned activities and working agenda. The electorate could question the candidates on issues concerning them and could express their opinion of the candidates and canvass votes “for” and “against” candidates. There was fierce competition for the post of head of external communication with three SP members standing for the position.

The chairperson of the Students’ Council Jānis Dāboliņš congratulated all SP board members: "I very much hope that the following year will be as successful as this year despite the economic crisis. We have made considerable progress; we have introduced a lot of new ideas, especially new election rules. I hope that they assisted the SP members in electing the most competent candidates. At present it may be difficult to feel the impact of these changes but they would definitely make our work much easier in the future.
I wish that we would be ranked higher not only among private but also among all higher education institutions. We will try to once again achieve the title of one of the best Students’ Council if not the best."

These were the first elections organised in accordance to new SP election regulations wherein elections will be held every year on the second Wednesday in January thereby providing new members the opportunity to get acquainted with SP activities allowing them to vote for the most competent person.
