Living in Riga
"The largest of the Baltic cities, Riga is a major metropolis, with a big-city atmosphere." The New York Sun, May 2004.
Riga is the capital of the Republic of Latvia, the state's administrative and political centre and the largest city in the Baltic States.
Nearly one third of Latvia's population (747 thousand) lives in the capital city Riga. Riga, the oldest still existing medieval city, was founded in 1201.
The value of Riga's cultural and historical significance has been recognised by the fact that its old city centre has been included in UNESCO's list of the world's most important cultural and natural sites.
Riga stayed under soviet rule until 1991 when Riga and Latvia regained independence and freedom. In year 2001 Riga celebrated its 800-year-anniversary and was one of Europe’s Cities of Culture.
Today Riga is one of Europe’s most dynamic and rapidly developing cities.
