International Multiplier Event of Erasmus+ project „ Unity in Diversity” at Turiba University (0)
Since 1 September 2016 the Department of Languages has been an active participant of an international Erasmus+ project „Language skills and intercultural issues in the hospitality industry: Unity in diversity in the EU labour market” (Project No. 2016-1-HR01-KA202-022160). Education institutions from nine countries have been involved in the project implementation: Tourism and Catering School Dubrovnik (Croatia), Turiba University (Latvia), Ekonomska šola Murska Sobota (Slovenia), Primrose Publishing (UK), IPSSA Nino Bergese (Italy), Universitatea Sapientia din Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Vilnius Business College (Lithuania), Provincial Directorate of Education in Turkey Kutahya MEM (Turkey), Vyšší odborná škola, Střední průmyslová škola a Obchodní akademie, Čáslav (Czech Republic).
The aim of the project was to create an interactive blended learning language course „Unity in Diversity” comprising on-line learning materials available on the Moodle Learning platform and face-to-face interactive materials incorporating case studies, games, problem-solving tasks, videos, etc. targeted at developing VET learners’ language, intercultural and digital competence, creativity, problem-solving skills and flexibility.
On May 11-12, 2018 an international multiplier seminar was held at Turiba University. The target audience was language educators from Latvia and Lithuania. During the multiplier event they were introduced with the project outputs created:
- interactive A1 level language learning course in 16 languages (CZ, DE, EN, ES, FR, GR, HR, HU, IT, LT, LV, RO, RU, SE, Si, TR),
- A2/B1 level language learning course in 16 languages, smartphone applications, interactive maps,
- blended-learning B2/C1 level English course – on-line tasks, case studies, problem solving tasks, web quests, etc.
- intercultural C1 level English course.
Ten language educators from Lithuania participated in the international seminar. They represented the following education institutions - University of Applied Social Sciences in Vilnius, Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences in Vilnius, Adult Education Centre of Vilnius AMES Language Academy, Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas as well as two language educators Irena Seniut and Vakaris Šaulys from Vilnius Business College, the project participants.
Many language educators from various education institutions from all over Latvia attended the event – from vocational education colleges (Bulduri Gardening College, Ogre College, Kuldīga Technological and Tourism College, Riga Hotel Management College), tertiary education institutions (Daugavpils University, Ventspils University College, the University of Economics and Culture, the Language Centre of Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, Rezekne Academy of Technologies, University of Latvia, Latvian Academy of Sport Education), adult education centres (Language centre Valodu kursi TEV, Language centre SIA KANGA), Riga Secondary School No.64, a certified tour guide from LiveRiga, as well as language educators from Turiba University.
All the seminar participants were directly involved in teaching languages to students studying Languages for Special Purposes (for tourism, services, catering, business, entrepreneurship, gastronomy, etc.), also involved in teacher education of the future language teachers, as well as working in adult education institutions and all level VET institutions.
During the seminar, the participants learnt the main methodologies of the project, the design and creation of the Learning Management System, the curricula designed, the various tasks created, etc. In order to learn how the learning platform functions, have a closer look at the tasks and materials created and prepare for using them in their language teaching classes, the seminar participants also had hands-on-experience in specially organised workshops.
The joint multiplier event was an excellent opportunity for the participants of both countries – Latvia and Lithuania, to exchange experience, network and foster further collaboration in language teaching/learning.
We are thankful to all the seminar participants for the interest and initiative shown! The useful suggestions made during the seminar will definitely help improving language teaching/learning for professional purposes.
